How To Plan Your First Camping Trip

without comments

There are a few key things to remember if you’ve never been camping alone, yes, even if you’ve gone with your parents.

Although it may seem like it is frivolous, make sure to check all of your equipment and your tent first. About a week before you leave for your trip, set up the tent. This allows you to check that you have all the tent pegs, poles and ropes needed to put the tent up properly. Check for any holes or damage, especially in the floor and roof of the tent, and thatís where water will come in if it rains.

Make sure you have a sleeping bag and pillow, and if you are taking an inflatable mattress, blow it up before packing it to make sure there is no air leaking from it. There is nothing worse than going to bed nice and comfortable and waking up a few hours later with a flat mattress and the hard ground beneath you. Take an extra blanket in case the temperature drops at night.

If you intend cooking at the campsite, remember that you need to take everything you will need to prepare a meal. Pack a crate for a fire to grill, 2 small pots, cutlery and anything else you can think of that you will use to cook. Starting a fire every time you want coffee is inconvienant, you should bring a small gas cooker. Consider refilling the gas before you leave. To keep clean dishes you will want to bring any necessary cleaning materials.

When you are packing non-perishable food, make sure that anything that has been opened is tightly sealed to prevent spills on route. It is common to forget spices and condiments, be sure to pack them. It is a good idea to use one container for all of the food so it can be used as a pantry for the trip, and keep all liquids in plastic bags so it doesnt get dry food wet. Buy perishables as you need them, If you decide to bring them, keep it at a minimum and pack them just before you leave.

Toiletries are not provided, pack toilet paper, and consider bringing a few different sizes of bath plugs, incase one isnt provided. If there is a community shower, you should cring plastic or rubber flip flops to wear while showering. A small bag or basket can help keep all of your belongings together while heading to the shower.

Unless you are camping in a remote spot, most things can be done without until you can get to the local store to buy them. Planning a well organized trip will help you relax when you arrive so you can enjoy all of the nature and feel very accomplished.
